Alvernia Gets A Team Effort In Win Over PSU-Schuylkill

Velazquez Leads The Way With 17 Points, 10 Rebounds

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Feb. 4, 2010) - Junior forward Alex Velazquez (Lancaster, Pa./Maheim Township) totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds, and was one of 13 players to score for Alvernia University (11-7) Thursday evening in a 72-32 win over Penn State-Schuylkill (11-7) in non-conference women's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

"I thought Alex played a nice game tonight," said Alvernia head coach Kevin Calabria. "One turnover, that's an outstanding statistic for Alex in 24 minutes. Alex has played two nice games in a row."

It's the second double-double in as many nights after the 5-9 junior posted 20 and 12 in Wednesday's win at Arcadia.  Fellow junior Lil Snyder (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) also reached double figures for the Crusaders with 10 points.

"Lil started out on fire," Calabria said, "at least 3-for-3 with the little jumper."

The coach's recall was right on.  Snyder started 3-for-3 on baseline jumpers as the Crusaders opened up a commanding 18-2 lead over the first eight minutes.  From that point the lead was never in jeopardy as 10 players played 10 or more minutes including sophomore point guard Julie Hahn (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) who played 23.

"Again, Julie Hahn five assists, two turnovers, 23 minutes," Calabria said. "Nice line. She's playing well now and she can really guard. I really like the way Julie Hahn is playing."

Hahn added four points, three rebounds, and a steal in a well-rounded stat line.

All but one player registered at least two points for the Crusaders including Cynthia Carralero (West, N.Y./Memorial) who scored her first points of her career and finished with four.

Alvernia has just a day to prepare for 11th ranked Messiah which is scheduled to visit the PEC this Saturday.

"It's just nice to be home a little bit now," said the coach. "We have at Lycoming and at Albright and everything else is home."

With five games to go in conference the Crusaders are tied for third with Widener, three games ahead of Lycoming in fifth.  The host the two teams ahead of them in the standings, Messiah (8-1) and Lebanon Valley (9-0) with another home game against Widener (6-3) and road contests with Lycoming (2-7) and Albright (2-7).
