Reading, Pa. (Mar. 1, 2010) - Alvernia University (16-9) was selected as the sixth seed in the ECAC South Region Women's Basketball Championships and will travel to #3 Wesley College (17-10) Wednesday evening for a 7:00 quarterfinal game.
Alvernia is making its second straight ECAC appearance and sixth overall. The Crusaders advanced to the semifinal last season where they lost to eventual champion Juniata. The Eagles also return to this year's event as the #8 seed.
Alvernia won the ECAC South Championship in 1995, but is 1-3 in ECAC games including a 22-point, home win over #5 Neumann last season.
Alvernia and Wesley were conference opponents in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference until 2007 when Wesley moved to the Capital Athletic Conference. The Crusaders are 12-4 all-time against the Wolverines including eight wins in the last night games. The only loss was a five-point, overtime loss in January of '06.
Alvernia and Wesley have two common opponents this season. Wesley defeated both Lycoming and Widener. Alvernia swept a the two-game series with Lycoming and was swept by Widener.
The Crusaders are led by All-Commonwealth players
Kelli McIntyre (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) and
Alex Velazquez (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) who average 14.9 and 14.5 points per game respectively. Sophomore center
Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) is the third player in double figures for the Crusaders averaging 11.8 points per game. Both Altemose and Velazquez are averaging over eight rebounds per contest.
The Wolverines have two players averaging double figures in scoring. Junior Angie Owens, the only player on the roster to start all 27 games, is averaging 16.2 points per game and Cory Boyd is averaging 12.3 points per game.
