Frostburg, Md. (Nov. 18, 2011) - Alvernia University (0-1) got eight points in eight minutes from Chelsea Gerringer (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) in the first half and built a 14-point lead at the break, but saw that dissappear midway through the second half then missed a game-tying free throw in the final seconds of a 55-54 loss to Grove City College Friday evening in game two of the Jim Crawley Women's Basketball Tournament hosted by Frostburg State University.
Alvernia will face the host Bobcats--who came up on the short end of a 52-49 final with North Carolina Wesleyan--Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Jim Crawley consolation game.
Alvernia broke an early 9-9 tie with a 10-0 run then went up 14 points, 29-15 on four straight free throws from freshman
Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) with under a minute left in the half. Yoh went to the line 10 times for the Crusaders in her college debut and knocked down eight free throws.
Sophomore
Alisa Greco (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) scored on a layup on the Crusaders' final possession of the half to push the lead to 16 points, 31-15, but Grove City answered with a bucket for a 31-17 halftime score.
Grove City scored the first six points of the second half and 19 of the first 23 to take a 36-35 lead with 11 minutes left to play. The Crusaders missed six times from the floor and had six turnovers during the first nine minutes of the half and added two missed free throws. Senior
Allie Toczylowski (Mantua, N.J./Clearview Regional)--who finished with a team-high 15 points and six rebounds--put the Crusaders back on top with a layup, and neither team led by more than four points until Grove City went up 54-49 with under 90 seconds to play.
Senior
Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) scored in the paint and Yoh hit two free throws around on free throw for Grove City to cut the gap to two. After hitting the jumper to go up five, Grove City finished the game going 1-for-3 from the free throw line and missing a 3.
Yoh was fouled on the rebound of the final Grove City miss and hit her first free throw. Grove City called a timeout beore the second attempt and Yoh was off the mark, just her second miss in 10 attempts, before the final horn.
Yoh joined Toczylowski in double figures with 10 points. Fifteen players saw time for the Crusaders who finished 17-for-25 from the free throw stripe.
Grove City and North Carolina Wesleyan will face off in the Jim Crawley championship Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
