Alvernia Defeats Blazers 9-0

BOX SCORE
Frederick, Md. (Oct. 24, 2012) - Seven different players scored for the Crusaders as Alvernia University (9-9, 3-5) defeated host Hood College (2-14, 0-8) by a score of 9-0 this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action.  Both Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and Natalie Messaros (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) scored twice for Alvernia, while Erin Solley (Reading, Pa./Oley Valley) added one goal and three assists.

Alvernia wasted no time getting on the board as they scored two goals within the first two minutes.  Both goals came off corner plays, both inserted by Solley.  Kyle Dillman (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) scored just 1:13 into the game, followed by Taylor Eichelberger (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) at 1:54.

After a 13-minute scoring break, the Crusaders again connected for two goals in less than a minute.  At 15:10, Lauren Guido (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) lofted a high shot over the keeper's reach, off a corner and assisted by Solley, for her tenth goal of the season.  Peto connected on a nice break-away goal soon after, and gave Alvernia the 4-0 lead at 16:04.

Alvernia added two more goals before halftime as Solley got one of her own off a scrum in front of the net in the 20th minute, and Messaros got her first of the game in the 25th minute with a strong shot that deflected into the net off the goalkeeper's pads.

The second half was more of the same for Alvernia with Peto getting her second of the game, to give Alvernia the 7-0 lead in the 42nd minute, followed by a goal from Melanie Lowry (Gap, Pa./Octorara) in the 45th minute, assisted by Peto.  Messaros got her second of the game in the 49th minute to put Alvernia up 9-0 for good.

In goal for Alvernia was Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) for the entire first half, while Courtney Daniels (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and Blaire Janney (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) split the second half right down the middle.  The trio of Crusader goalkeepers posted the shutout without a single save as the Blazers didn't manage a shot the entire game.

Alvernia concludes their regular-season on Sat. Oct. 27th when they host Cabrini College for senior day at 12:00pm.  With a win, they will be eligible for the ECAC Championships and will await a possible bid.
