Alvernia Goes 1-2 At North/South Duals

Collegeville, Pa. (Jan. 11, 2020) - Alvernia University went 1-2 at the North/South Duals Saturday hosted by Ursinus College.

The Golden Wolves fell to Rhode Island College, 32-22, then dropped their middle match of the day, 45-6 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and closed the day with a 40-12 win over Camden County Community College.

Palmer Rodehaber went 3-0 for the Golden Wolves at the heavyweight position. Chase Smith and Tonee Ellis both won a pair of bouts in the RIC and Camden matches.

Rhode Island College had a strong start in the first match of the day, winning the first four bouts and jumping out to a 21-0 lead. The Wolves--and several other teams in the field--were thinned out by the flu and had to forfeit two of the first four. Alvernia got on the board when Gavin Hollingsworth scored a major decision at 157 with a 13-5 win.

RIC answered back with a win by fall at 165 and a tech fall at 174 to take a 32-4 lead with three bouts left. Smith pinned his man at 184 in 54 seconds, Ellis won by forfeit at 197, and Rodenhaber followed with a pin in 3:13.

WPI won the first nine bouts in the second match before Rodenhaber earned his second win of the day with a pin in 1:48.

After a forfeit in the opening weight against Camden County, Alexander Gorlin won his bout 16-0 at 133 pounds. Brock Drahus won by forfeit at 141 and Hollingsworth put Alvernia up 16-6 with an 18-1 win at 157.

Tanner Vogel earned a forfeit win at 165 and SMith, Ellis, and Rodenhaber all finished off first period pins.

Alvernia returns home and will compete in its first ever MAC Championship next Saturday at Lycoming.
