Men's Ice Hockey Takes Rivier to Shootout in First Game In Program History

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 28, 2022) - Alvernia University (0-0-1) tied Rivier University (0-0-1) and took the shootout 1-0 in the first game in program history on Friday night in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Body Zone.

Alvernia needed just 1:10 to secure its first goal in history, and the honors went to Logan vande Meerakker. Alvernia had a 5 v 4 power play after the Raiders started the game with a protocol penalty. Meerakker set up the play behind his own goalie, took it the length of the ice, and beat the goalie to put Alvernia on the board early, 1-0.

Alvernia put in a flurry of shots over the next eight minutes, but Rivier was able to make the stops to keep it a 1-0 goal game. It stayed a 1-0 game going into the second period.

Rivier scored two goals within a minute to tie and then take the lead five minutes into the second period.

The Golden Wolves then evened it up with just three minutes remaining in the second period on a power-play goal by Sawyer Senio.

The game remained tied through the third period as the Golden Wolves killed two penalties, including a five minute major, to send the game into overtime.

Alvernia continued to kill off the five minute major into overtime. Meerakker had a fantastic look as overtime was ending, but was unable to convert the shot as the game went into a shootout.

Both sides missed their first opportunities in the shootout to keep it 0-0 going into round two. The Raiders missed their second shot while Alvernia's Jason Finan made his attempt to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead in the shootout. The third man up for the Raiders had his opportunity saved by Alvernia's Colin Cain to seal the shutout win for Alvernia.

Cain finished the night with 35 saves in net. Meerakker finished with a goal and an assist for the Golden Wolves.
