Wilkes Rolls Past Alvernia, 35-14

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2022) - Wilkes University (4-1, 3-1) put up 21 points in the second half en route to a 35-14 win over Alvernia University (1-4, 0-3) on Saturday afternoon in MAC football action at Alvernia.

The Colonels finished the game with 471 yards of total offense and improved to 4-1 overall and are 3-1 in MAC play. Alvernia produced over 300 yards of offense, but struggled to find the end zone as the Golden Wolves fell to 0-3 in MAC play.

Wilkes won the toss, but differed to give Alvernia the ball to open the game. EJ Lee took the opening hand off nine yards up the field to set up a 2nd and 1 for the Golden Wolves on the Alvernia 34 yard line. But, Alvernia was plagued by three false start penalties to push Alvernia into a 3rd and long situation. Alvernia handed the ball off to Lee who was able to pick up 18 yards and a first down for the Golden Wolves.

Another false start for Alvernia pushed the Golden Wolves back to a 1st and 15. The Golden Wolves completed three short passes, but were unable to pick up a first down as the drive stalled and Alvernia punted it away.

Alvernia punter Hunter Bojanic pinned the Colonels on their own three yard line, but Wilkes opened its series with a 46-yard pass deep down the middle to push the Colonels into Alvernia territory.

Wilkes continued to pick away down the field, but faced a 4th and 5 on the Alvernia 9-yard line. The Colonels opted to go for it on the early fourth down, and converted. Wilkes quarterback Isaiah Rodriguez found Zane Grover on a nine yard connection on Alvernia's side and Grover was able to stay inbounds and cross the plane for the touchdown. Wilkes converted the PAT to go up 7-0 with 4:11 to play in the first quarter.

Alvernia's offense could not get anything going the rest of the quarter as the Golden Wolves trailed Wilkes 7-0 going into the first quarter.

The Golden Wolves took over early in the second quarter at the Alvernia 20 yard line and picked up a first down following back-to-back rushes by Monte McMorris and Lorenzo Green. After an eight yard completion from McMorris to Jacob Montalto, Alvernia faced a 3rd and 3 on its own 41 yard line, but the drive was halted when McMorris was picked off by Leroy Marshall.

Wilkes took advantage of the turnover. The Colonels quickly made their way into the Red Zone on a 34-yard completion, and capped off the quick drive with a five-yard rush by Elijah Jules.

After the Colonels and Golden Wolves traded possessions, Alvernia took over on the Wilkes 40 with 6:24 to go in the half. The Golden Wolves worked their way down the field on all direct-snap rushing plays, with Kyle Stanton, Ka'More Gill, and Lee each picking up chunks of yards for the Golden Wolves. Joseph Perkins capped off the drive for Alvernia on a 5-yard end around rush to up the Wilkes sideline. Brett Conrad converted the PAT for Alvernia to get the Golden Wolves within seven, 14-7.

Wilkes took over with 3:33 to play in the half and quickly made their way into Alvernia territory. With time expiring in the half, Wilkes had a 1st and 5 on the Alvernia five-yard line. Alvernia's defense was able to make a goal-line stand and force a fire drill field goal attempt by the Colonels as the clock was ticking down. The attempt went wide left with one second left on the clock as Alvernia was able to go into the half trailing by just seven, 14-7.

The Golden Wolves and Colonels traded possessions to open the second half until Alvernia took over on its own 24 yard line with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. Alvernia worked its way to the Wilkes 30 yard line following a 15 yard completion to Lee and an ensuing roughing the passer call. But, Alvernia's momentum was halted again on an interception, giving Wilkes the ball on its own 45 yard line following a 23 yard return.

Wilkes again took advantage of the interception, and immediately moved 20 yards down the field to the Alvernia 35 yard line on a 20 yard pass across the middle. A roughing the passer call on the play by Alvernia moved Wilkes another 15 yards to the Alvernia 20.

Back-to-back rushes by Jules set Wilkes up for a 7-yard touchdown reception by Nate Whitaker. Wilkes converted the PAT to go up 21-7 on Alvernia with 1:26 left in the half.

After Alvernia went 4-and-out, Wilkes got the ball back as the third quarter came to an end and again worked its way down the field, including a 20-yard pass by Isaih Rodriguez . Later in the drive, Rodriguez connected with Walter Lewis on a 16 yard completion for a Wilkes touchdown. Following a successful PAT, Wikles held a 28-7 lead over Alvernia with 11:41 to play.

Alvernia was driving on its next possession following a 39-yard reception to Neeko Scurlock down Alvernia's sideline. Two plays later, with Alvernia on ihe Wilkes six, Washington lined up under center but fumbled the snap. Wilkes recovered the ball and on the first play of the next drive threw a 93 yard touchdown reception to put the Colonels up 35-7.

After trading possessions and Alvernia recovering a Wilkes fumble, Alvernia took over on the Wilkes 40 yard line. The Golden Wolves called Ozmenre Jones' number, and Jones broke off a 33 yard touchdown run to make it a 35-14 game. However, neither team threatened the rest of the game as Wilkes came away with the 35-14 win

Lee finished with 99 yards on the ground and 28 yards in the air to lead Alvernia's offense. Jamel Fleming and Elijah Carr led Alvernia's defense with nine tackles each.

Alvernia is back in action on Saturday at Widener.
