Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season with 9-0 Sweep of Berks

BOX SCORE Reading, Pa. (March 20, 2022) - Alvernia University (2-2) opened up its spring season with a 9-0 win over Penn State Berks (0-1) on Sunday afternoon at Hampden Park in Reading, Pa.

The Golden Wolves opened the day going 3-0 in doubles action before pulling away with a sweeping six wins at singles for the 9-0 victory.

The duo of Drew Heinzelmann - playing in his first collegiate match - and Michael Brophy got things started with an 8-2 win at #1 doubles. The duos of Luke Berger and Jayden Lewis, and Thomas Figurelli and Derrick Boltz picked up 8-0 and 8-1 wins, respectively, at #2 and #3 doubles to give Alvernia the 3-0 advantage heading into singles play.

The Golden Wolves kept it up in singles action, with Brophy picking up a 6-1, 6-0 win at #1 singles and Berger toughing out a 6-0, 6-4 win at #2 singles.

Heinzelmann kept things rolling 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win at #3 singles, and Lewis recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win at #4 singles.

Figurelli also went straight sets at #5 singles, and Derrick Boltz capped things off with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 singles for Alvernia's 9-0 victory.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on March 31 with a home contest against PSU Abington.
