Monarchs Down Golden Wolves, 5-1

Pittston, Pa (January 28, 2023) - Alvernia University (6-12-2, 5-10-1) fell to King's University (4-12-2, 3-9-1) 5-1, in UCHC men's ice hockey action Saturday night at King's. 
 
Alvernia fired 12 shots in the first ten minutes of the first period with eight shots going on target but King's goalie Tyler Sayger saved all eight. 
 
King's got on the board first when Denys Arkhypenko found the back of the net after assists from Ray Alexander and Matthew Metsa. King's then took a 1-0 lead with five minutes left in the period. 
 
The Monarch's tallied their second goal with one minute left in the period when Jackson Grozelle found Casey Gerstein who fired the puck into the back of the net to give King's a 2-0 advantage heading into the first intermission. 
 
A scoreless second period was highlighted by Alvernia firing 19 shots with 13 going on target, King's tallied 13 total shots with eight being on goal. 

The Golden Wolves came out of the final intermission and immediately applied pressure on the Monarch defense. Alvernia fired 14 shots in the first five minutes of the final period with eight shots being saved by Sayger. 

King's extended its lead to three in the fifth minute when Brendan Krawczyk found the back of the net to give King's the 3-0 lead. 

The Golden Wolves pulled one back 12 minutes into the third period when Isaac Chapman scored a power play goal after assists from Peter Falivena and Christian Dahl to make it 3-1 Monarchs. 

King's responded two minutes later when Arkhypenko tallied his second goal of the game after an assist from Samuel Libetti to make it 4-1 Monarchs. 

King's netted one more insurance goal with just over a minute left in the game when Gerstein scored an empty net goal to secure the 5-1 victory over the Golden Wolves. 

Daigle finished with 19 saves in net for the Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia was led by Chapman with the lone goal on eight shots, Jordan Gagnon led the team with nine shots and had six on target. Jason Finan tallied six shots on goal and Sawyer Senio led the Golden Wolves with ten face off wins. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action next Sunday when they travel to Albertus Magnus College to take on the Falcons at 4:00 PM.
