Buffalo State Downs Alvernia 5-1 in Outdoor Classic

Buffalo, NY (Jan. 7, 2023) - Alvernia University (5-8-1) fell to Buffalo State College (9-6) 5-1 in non-conference men's ice hockey action on Saturday evening at the Buffalo State Outdoor Classic, hosted at Buffalo RiverWorks.

Much like the first meeting of the two teams on Friday night, Alvernia got on the board first. However, Buffalo scored four unanswered - including an empty net goal - to down Alvernia 5-1. The game was held outdoors in the 20 degree air of Buffalo along the banks of the Buffalo River.

Alvernia opened the scoring with Jason Finan firing one into net off the left faceoff circle to get Alvernia on the board, 1-0, just 4:30 into action. But, that would be Alvernia's only goal of the night.

The Bengals evened it up with a goal four minutes later, and took the lead with their second goal in as many minutes. Alvernia killed off a Buffalo powerplay to end the quarter trailing by one, 2-1.

The Bengals opened up the second period with an onslaught of shots and broke through with a power play goal five minutes into the period to take the 3-1 lead.

Alvernia then went on a power play of its own, but could not get one back on the Bengals. Buffalo State then added to its lead with six minutes left in the period to make it a 4-1 game.

The Golden Wolves kept the puck away from the Bengals for most of the remainder of the second period, but trailed them 4-1 going into the final frame.

Alvernia opened the third period with early pressure on the Bengals and then found themselves on a power play after three minutes of the third period action. Alvernia fired off three shots during the power play, but were unable to convert.

The Golden Wolves were held to just six shots on goal the rest of the way, and the Bengals scored the final goal of the game on an empty net shot for the 5-1 win.

Brandon Daigle finished with 25 saves in net for Alvernia, and Peter Falivena led Alvernia with eight faceoff wins.

Alvernia is back in action on Friday for a weekend series with Chatham.
