Alvernia Overpowers Juniata in Saturday Sweep

Huntingdon, Pa. (April 8, 2023) - Alvernia University (19-9) combined for 35 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Juniata College (4-19) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Juniata.

In game one of the afternoon doubleheader, Alvernia jumped out to a 9-0 lead through five innings and cruised to a 14-5 victory over the Eagles. The Golden Wolves then kept it rolling in game two, posting 21 runs to Juniata's one in the 21-1 victory.

After a hitless first inning for Alvernia in game one, the Golden Wolves got on the board in the top of the second as a Nick Nutile single and Cameron Abele double drove in runs to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead.

Alvernia kept it rolling with a four-run third inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Jason Kelly drove in Zach Rogacki with an RBI single, and Brandon Smith singled to drive in Connor Friedel. Nutile then drove in Kelly on a fielder's choice, and Abele capped off the inning with an RBI single to bring in Nutile.

The Golden Wolves capitalized on Eagle mistakes in the top of the fourth as Joe Glass and Rogacki scored on wild pitches to give Alvernia the 8-0 advantage.

Alvernia then scored in the fourth straight inning as Glass tripled to bring in Thomas Faggioni and give Alvernia the 9-0 advantage.

The Eagles got three runs back on a two-run homer and an RBI double to get within six, 9-3, in the bottom of the sixth, but Alvernia pushed the lead back up to eight, 11-3, with two runs in the top of the seventh. Both Abele and Nutile scored on an error during Evan Thomas' at-bat in the top half of the seventh.

The Eagles picked up another run in the bottom of the eighth, but Alvernia capped off the game with a three-run top of the ninth. RJ Emrich drove in two-runs on a pinch hit single, and Tim Siegel scored the final run for Alvernia during an error on Mike Pulcini's at-bat.

Juniata got one back in the bottom of the ninth, but never threatened as Alvernia took the 14-5 win.

Evan Wood went five innings to improve to 5-0 overall on the season. He struck out six and allowed just two hits.

Abele went 3-for-5 with  two RBIs and one run scored to lead Alvernia's offense. Smith went 2-for-4 and picked up his 100th career hit on his RBI single in the third inning.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back. Smith, Friedel, Nutile, and Billy Dougar all drove in a run for Alvernia, and Rogacki scored on a wild pitch to give Alvernia the 5-0 lead.

Alvernia kept it going with a four run top of the second. Mike Ramundo and Jason Lind each scored a run on a double, Nutile scored a run on a sacrifice fly, and Grant Fitzgerald scored a run on a single as Alvernia took a 9-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves tacked on two more in the top of the third as two runs scored on a Lind single to give Alvernia the 11-0 lead.

After a break from scoring for Alvernia in the top of the fourth, the Eagles got one back in the bottom half of the inning. But, Alvernia got right back to work with a four run top of the fifth as Alvernia took a 15-1 lead. Fitzgerald drove in two runs on a single, and Thomas and Smith drove in a run each on singles of their own.

Alvernia didn't stop there, as the Golden Wolves added five more in the top of the eighth. Fitzgerald drove in two more runs on a single, and Thomas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to add another run to Alvernia's already commanding lead. Joe Canterino was walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run, and a wild pitch scored the final run of the inning as Evan Amato came around and scored.

Alvernia added one more onto its lead in the top of the ninth as Thomas hit an infield single to bring in Pulcini for the 21-1 lead.

Juniata put up two hits in the top of the ninth, but never threatened as Alvernia completed the sweep with the 21-1 win.
