Golden Wolves Fall to #5 Red Hawks, 2-1

Montclair, N.J. (September 20, 2023) - Alvernia University (2-4) fell to #5 Montclair State University (6-0-1) 2-1, in a non-conference men's soccer matchup Wednesday night at Montclair State.

The Red Hawks got on the board first in the 14th minute when Alvernia keeper Evan Solley came out of his net to try and clear a ball off the foot of Montclair State's Amer Lukovic but Lukovic avoided Solley and put the ball in the back of the net to make it 1-0 Red Hawks after just 14 minutes of play.

The Red Hawks continued to apply the pressure for the remaining 30 minutes of the half, firing 11 shots at the Alvernia net but only three went on frame and Solley saved all three to keep the game at 1-0 heading into the half.

The Golden Wolves found an equalizer just over ten minutes into the second half when Ryan Cogill was fouled in the box by the Red Hawks and Alvernia was awarded a penalty kick. Cogill then stepped up to the spot to take the kick and buried it into the bottom right corner of the goal to make it 1-1.

Montclair State responded just five minutes later when Lukovic tallied his second goal of the game to give the Red Hawks a 2-1 lead with under 30 to play.

The Golden Wolves fired three shots in the final 15 minutes but the Red Hawks defense held strong to secure the 2-1 victory.

Solley recorded ten saves in net for the Golden Wolves.

Cogill led Alvernia with the goal and tallied two shots, Connor Kraycik, Matthew Kerr, Matt Knowles and Eli Klinger all recorded shots for Alvernia as well. Gabe Wunderlich recorded two shots as well for the Golden Wolves.

Alvernia is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Cabrini to take on the Cavaliers at 6:00 PM.
