Golden Wolves Secure Series Sweep, Take Down Cougars, 5-3

Pittsburgh, Pa (January 13, 2024) - Hunter Alden tallied a hat-trick for the Golden Wolves to power Alvernia University (10-5-1, 8-4-0) to a 5-3 victory over Chatham University (5-9-0, 4-8-0) in a UCHC men's ice hockey matchup Saturday evening at Chatham. 

The Golden Wolves netted goals in every period en route to the 5-3 victory and secured the series sweep of the Cougars. 

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia started things off in the first five minutes of the opening period when Jordan Gagnon found the back of the net after assists from Eli Rivers and Max Cole to put the Golden Wolves up 1-0 early in the first period. 
  • Hunter Alden made it 2-0 just over two minutes later when he lit the lamp for the Golden Wolves. Rivers recorded his second assist of the night and Jason Finan tallied the other assist. 
  • Chatham grabbed one back in the 12th minute of the first period when Kyle Contessa scored a power play goal to cut the Golden Wolves lead in half, 2-1 heading into the first intermission. 
  • Alvernia pushed its lead back to two just 17 seconds into the second period when Alden lit the lamp for the second time to make it 3-1 Golden Wolves. Logan vande Meerakker tallied the assist. 
  • The Cougars scored another power play goal four minutes into the period to pull within one again after Nick Cyprian found the back of the net for Chatham. 
  • The Golden Wolves found one more in the second period when Matthew Imbriano and Riley Egan assisted Gabriel Malek in the final minute of the period to make it 4-2 Golden Wolves after two periods. 
  • Alvernia tallied its fifth goal of the game in the eighth minute of the third period when Alden netted his third goal of the game to make it 5-2 Golden Wolves. Isaac Chapman and vande Meerakker tallied assists on the goal for Alvernia. 
  • Chatham grabbed one more in the tenth minute when Milan Cermak scored a goal to make it 5-3 but it was not enough as Alvernia secured the 5-3 victory over the Cougars. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Hunter Alden led the way for the Golden Wolves with three goals, Jordan Gagnon and Gabriel Malek both netted goals for Alvernia. 
  • Eli Rivers and Logan vande Meerakker both recorded a team high two assists on the night. 
  • Alvernia had seven players record an assist and 16 of Alvernia's 19 skaters recorded a shot on goal. 
  • Vincent Servizzi led the way for the Golden Wolves with three blocks and both Jake Sutton and Gagnon recorded two. 
  • Jackson Fellner recorded 30 saves in goal for the Golden Wolves and recorded his fifth victory of the season. 
Of Note
  • The victory marks the tenth win of the season for the Golden Wolves and is the first time in their young program history that the team has recorded ten wins in a season. 
  • Hunter Alden's hat-trick is the third of the season for Alvernia and just the fourth in program history.

  • Alvernia is back in action on Friday when they host Arcadia for game one of the weekend series. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 PM after the Women take on Chatham at 3:30 PM.
