York, Pa (January 20, 2024) - Matthew Lackman and Mauro Pellot-Vazquez both secured first place finishes at their respective weight classes to lead Alvernia University to a second place finish at the 2024 MAC Championships Saturday afternoon at York. 

The Golden Wolves had eight wrestlers earn All-MAC honors and had 14 wrestlers secure finishes in the top six. Keito Shaw, Isaac Kassis and Chance Babb all recorded second place finishes at their weight classes and James Circle, Brian Czaus and Avery Leonard all recorded third place finishes, all of which received All-Conference honors. 

Jason Rezac recorded a fourth place finish at 157 lbs. and Gavin Hollingsworth, Garrett Gehr, Anthony Portillo and Ethan Staples all tallied victories in their fifth place matches and Ryan LePore rounded out Alvernia's place winners with a sixth place finish at 165 lbs. 

How it Happened

• Keito Shaw recorded two tech falls to start his day with a 17-1 tech fall over Principe (Stevens) and a 15-0 tech fall over Messiah's Hutchison to advance to the semifinals. Shaw then tallied a 6-3 decision over Delaware Valley's Asfour before falling to Vega (Stevens) in the 125 lbs. final by way of a 9-1 major decision. This is Shaw's second All-MAC honor as he finished third in the 125 lbs. bracket in 2021-2022. 
• Avery Leonard competed at 141 lbs. at the championships and after a first round bye, Leonard tallied a 19-2 tech fall over Germano (King's) . Leonard then dropped his semifinal bout to Diaz (Stevens) by decision, 4-3. He then received a medical forfeit from Gehr (Alvernia) to advance to the third place bout where he defeated Delaware Valley's Weaver by way of a pin in 1:02 to secure third place at 141 lbs. This is Leonard's second All-MAC honor as he received second team honors in 2022-2023. 
• Chance Babb recorded a second place finish at 149 lbs. to earn All-MAC honors. Babb took down Turi (King's) by decision, 5-1 in the first round and then recorded back to back falls over Bender (York) and Monger (Messiah) to advance to the finals. Babb dropped the 149 lbs. final to Vizzoni from Stevens by decision, 7-3 to take second. This is Babb's second All-Conference honor after he finished third in 2022-2023. 
• Matthew Lackman secured his third straight 165 lbs. title with a 15-0 tech fall over Coleman (Del Val). Lackman took down Ramos (King's) by fall in 1:51 in his first round bout and then recorded back to back tech falls in the quarter and semi final matches with a 19-3 victory over Bailey (Stevens) and a 18-3 tech fall over Hockenberry-Folk (York) to advance to the finals. 
• James Circle recorded a third place finish in the 174 lbs. bracket and started his day with two straight pins. Circle recorded a fall over Costello (King's) in 4:08, another over Mushinski (Del Val) in 4:01 to advance to the semifinals. Circle then dropped the semifinal bout to Major (Stevens) by fall but bounced back with a 15-7 major decision over Hollingsworth (Alvernia) to advance to the third place match. Circle then tallied a 9-7 victory by decision over Moore (Del Val) to secure third team All-MAC honors, the first All-MAC honor of his career. 
• Isaac Kassis recorded his third straight All-MAC performance at the championships with a second place finish in the 184 lbs. bracket. Kassis received a first round bye and then recorded back to back tech falls with a 17-1 victory over O'dell (Del Val) and a 23-4 tech fall over Hall (Del Val) to advance to the final. Kassis dropped the title bout to Martsinkovsky (Stevens) by decision, 4-1 to secure second team All-MAC honors. 
• Mauro Pellot-Vazquez was the only other Golden Wolves to secure gold at the championships with a first place finish at 197 lbs. Pellot-Vazquez received a first round bye and then recorded back to back pins to advance to the finals. Pellot-Vazquez took down Hofler (York) by fall in 2:00 and Dereszynski (Messiah) by fall in 3:33. Pellot-Vazquez then recorded his third pin of the day after pinning Wagner (Del Val) in just 1:42 to secure the 197 lbs. title.
• Brian Czaus rounded out the All-MAC honorees for the Golden Wolves with a third place finish at 285 lbs. Czaus received a first round bye and then recorded a 10-2 major decision over Rosa (Stevens) to advance to the semifinals. Czaus dropped the semifinal bout to Benner (Messiah) by decision, 5-0 but bounced back with a 6-5 decision over Martin (York) in the consi-semis to advance to the third place match. Czaus then took down Ruiz from Stevens by decision, 10-4 to secure third place. Czaus's third place finish marks his first All-MAC honor. 

Inside the Results 

• Alvernia tallied 15 victories by fall and 19 technical fall victories at the championships.
• The Golden Wolves finished with 158 team points at the championships, eight and a half points behind Stevens, who took home the team title.
