Alvernia Scores Three Straight but Knights take Shootout

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 23, 2024) - Alvernia University scored three unanswered to force a shootout with Arcadia University, but the Knights grabbed the extra point following a 2-1 shootout on Tuesday night in UCHC men's ice hockey action at Body Zone.

Arcadia jumped out to a 4-1 lead six minutes into the second period. Alvernia cut Arcadia's lead in half a minute later and scored two more in the third period to even it up at 4-4 for the tie. But, the Golden Wolves fell in the shootout, 2-1, to give Arcadia the extra point in UCHC standings.

How it Happened
  • After a trading of shots in the early minutes, the Knights broke the scoring open 8:21 into the game and just four seconds into a power play. The Knights scored off the ensuing faceoff following the penalty call to make it a 1-0 game.
  • Alvernia was awarded a penalty shot just under a minute later. Isaac Chapman took the attempt for Alvernia, but Arcadia's goalie made the stop.
  • With just over four minutes to play in the opening period, Arcadia made it a 2-0 game off a tip-in goal by Dylan Florit. 
  • Alvernia answered with 2:25 to play in the period as Jordan Gagnon fired one into net off the assist of Andrew Deschenes and Hunter Alden.
  • Alvernia outshot the Knights 23-16 overall on the period and 15-10 on goal.
  • The Golden Wolves started off the second period with an early power play opportunity, but Alvernia was unable to convert as the Knights continued to hold the 2-1 advantage.
  • Just under a minute after Alvernia's power play ended, the Knights tacked on another goal to take a 3-1 lead and made it a 4-1 game four minutes later.
  • Just 20 seconds later, the game went to 4v4 following a five minute game misconduct on Arcadia and a two minute minor on the Golden Wolves. Alvernia took advantage of the open ice to cut Arcadia's lead in half as Logan vande Meerakker scored off the assist of Chapman. 
  • Both teams traded power plays to close out the second period, but the game remained at 4-2 in favor of the Knights heading into the final frame.
  • Alvernia again outshot the Knights in the second period, with Alvernia firing 16 shots on goal to Arcadia's nine.
  • Alvernia got within one, 4-3, five minutes into the third period with Chapman scoring off a hard shot off the blue line from the assists of vande Meerakker and Deschenes. 
  • Alvernia then evened it up at 4-4 with just over eight minutes to play in regulation as Frazer Dodd connected with a shot in off the behind the net pass Vincent Servizzi. Chapman also fed in on the play for his second assist of the night.
  • Both sides had looks to grab the win in regulation, but neither could find the back of the net.
  • Arcadia came into overtime pressuring and outshot Alvernia 4-2 on goal in the overtime. But, neither team scored as the game moved into a shootout. 
  • Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the shootout following a stop from Jackson Fellner and a made attempt by Sean Kenny. But, Arcadia made two of its next three attempts while stopping Alvernia on its next three attempts to take the shootout, 2-1. 
Inside the Box Score
  • Chapman led Alvernia with a goal and two assists and vande Meerakker finished with a goal and an assist. Deschenes also finished with two points off of two assists.
  • Peter Falivena led Alvernia on the faceoff going 9-for-13.
  • Jackson Fellner made 26 saves in net for Alvernia.
Of Note
  • Alvernia outshot the Knights 84-46 overall and 56-30 on goal. 
  • Logan vande Meerakker extended his point streak seven games. He also recorded his 11th multipoint game of the season with his goal and assist.
  • Arcadia took five of the six conference points available in the series, but Alvernia still sits in fourth overall in UCHC standings.
