Alvernia Goes 3-1 at Ursinus’ Manganaro Duals

Collegeville, Pa (January 6, 2024) - Alvernia University finished the day 3-1 at the Manganaro Duals in men's wrestling action Saturday afternoon at Ursinus.

The Golden Wolves defeated the US Merchant Marine Academy 29-19, the University of Southern Maine, 37-10, and Rhode Island College by a score of 32-21. Alvernia's only loss came to the US Coast Guard Academy by a score of 30-11.

How it Happened

Alvernia's first match came against the US Coast Guard Academy with the Golden Wolves falling by a score of 30-11. USCGA took the 125 and 133 pound matches to take a 9-0 lead before Avery Leonard defeated Owen Woolcott 10-0 to grab Alvernia's first points of the match. The USCGA then recorded wins in the final five bouts of the match to take the dual by a score of 30-11. Matthew Lackman recorded a tech fall in his bout, 16-0 and Isaac Kassis earned a 6-0 decision over Kenneth Marra in the 184 pound match.
The Golden Wolves turned around and took down Southern Maine in the second round of the duals by a score of 37-10. Again, Alvernia dropped the first two matches of the dual but Leonard responded with a 24-6 tech fall in the 141 pound match to pull the Golden Wolves within one, 6-5. Southern Maine grabbed the 149 pound match but Alvernia came flying back, rattling off six straight victories to secure the 37-10 victory. Chance Babb, Lackman, Gavin Hollingsworth, Kassis, Mauro Pellot-Vazquez and Brian Czaus all recorded victories en route to the victory.
Alvernia then faced Rhode Island College in the third round and came out with a 32-21 victory. Leonard yet again got things going for the Golden Wolves at 141 pounds when he tallied a pin in 3:55 to pull within three, 9-6 after Rhode Island took the first two bouts. Quinn Tobin then followed up with a 15-0 tech fall at 149 pounds. Jaso Rezac recorded a fall at 1:23 in the 157 pound bout and Lackman and Hollingsworth both recorded falls against their respective opponents. James Circle also recorded a 12-5 decision in the 174 pound bout en route to the victory.
The Golden Wolves rounded out their day with a 29-19 victory over the US Merchant Marine Academy in the final round of the duals. Alvernia again struggled to secure wins at the 125 and 133 pound bouts as the USMMA took an early 9-0 lead. Garrett Gehr got things going for Alvernia with a fall in 50 seconds of the 141 pound match. USMMA took the 149 pound bout to extend the lead to 13-6. Babb and Lackman responded with back to back pins in the 157 and 165 pound matches and Circle and Hollingsworth both recorded major decisions in their bouts to swing the lead in Alvernia's favor, 29-13. The USMMA grabbed six points in the 285 pound match after a fall but Alvernia still secured the 29-19 victory and a 3-1 record on the day.

Inside the Results

#1 ranked 165 pounder Matthew Lackman went a perfect 4-0 on the day in the 165 pound weight class and recorded three falls and a 16-0 tech fall.
Avery Leonard went a perfect 3-0 in the three matches he wrestled on the day in the 141 pound weight class and recorded a major decision, a 24-6 tech fall and a fall in his final match.
Isaac Kassis also went 3-0 on the day with two victories in the 184 pound weight class and a victory in the 197 pound bout. Kassis recorded a decision, a fall and another decision at 197 pounds.

Of Note

Alvernia extended its record to 6-2 at the Ursinus Manganaro Duals.
The Golden Wolves advance to 10-2 in dual competitions on the season.
