PREVIEW: Alvernia Set for MAC Commonwealth Championship

TuesdayReading, Pa. (Nov. 4, 2024) - Alvernia University Men's Soccer has earned the fourth seed in the 2024 MAC Commonwealth Championship tournament after finishing the regular season with a 4-3 record in MAC Commonwealth play.

The Golden Wolves will head to top-seeded Messiah for one of two semifinal games on Tuesday night. On the other side of the bracket, #3 Widener heads to #2 York.

Alvernia's Season So Far (NPI Rank: 106th)
Alvernia finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-7-3, and the Golden Wolves were 4-3 in conference play. Alvernia had a fantastic start to the season, going 5-1 through the first six games - including a 3-2 win over #2 Cortland. Alvernia lost a step heading into conference play, but rebounded with wins over Albright and Widener in two of the first three games of conference play. Alvernia also had a 2-0 win over Stevens in between. 

The Golden Wolves then dropped two straight to Messiah and Eastern before rebounding with a 3-0 win over Hood and 1-0 win over Stevenson to close out the regular season.

Golden Wolves to Watch
Ryan Cogill: Cogill leads Alvernia - and the MAC Commonwealth - with 16 goals on the year. He has 34 points and six game-winning goals on the year. Cogill enters Tuesday with a .308 shot percentage, and a .558 shot on goal percentage. Cogill is also a perfect five-for-five on PKs.

Connor Kraycik: Kraycik enters Tuesday with six goals and four assists. He leads the Golden Wolves with 58 shots, and has a .586 shot on goal percentage. Kraycik is also two-for-two on PKs.

Dominic Flowers: Flowers leads Alvernia with seven assists on the year, and he also has five goals. He enters Tuesday as one of the hottest players for the Golden Wolves, ending the regular season with at least one point in Alvernia's final two games.

Evan Solley: Solley has had a career year in goal for the Golden Wolves. The senior picked up his fifth shutout and tenth win of the year on Saturday. He has 101 saves on the year for a .783 save percentage. He enters Tuesday with a 1.45 goals against average.

Alvernia Against the Field
vs. #1 Messiah: Alvernia hosted Messiah on October 23rd. The Golden Wolves trailed 1-0 at the half, but Alvernia came out of the half hot and had its opportunities. Connor Kraycick scored a goal for the Golden Wolves, but it was called back on a very close offsides call. Messiah then scored goals in the 86th and 88th minutes for the 3-0 win.

vs. #2 York: Alvernia opened MAC Commonwealth play at York back on October 5th. Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute on a goal from Dominic Flowers. York evened it up at 1-1 right before the half. After a back and forth second half, York scored the game-winner in the 75th minute and did not allow an Alvernia shot on goal the rest of the way.

vs. #3 Widener: Widener took an early 1-0 lead on a successful penalty kick in the 8th minute, but Alvernia shut down Widener from there. The Golden Wolves evened it up on a Ryan Cogill goal in the 14th minute, and Cristian Topovich broke the tie in the 80th minute for the 2-1 win. Alvernia allowed just three shots on goal from the Pride. 

The Rest of the MAC Commonwealth Field

#1 Messiah University (NPI Rank: 48th)
The top-seeded Falcons are a historically solid program. Messiah has won the last five MAC Commonwealth Championship, and has won 21 MAC titles overall. Messiah earned the top-seed with a 7-0 record in conference play, and the Falcons finished the regular season with a 12-5-1 record overall. After a solid 3-0 start to the year, Messiah hit a 1-5-1 rough patch entering conference play. Messiah got right back on track once conference play hit and finished undefeated in the conference, allowing just two goals along the way. The Falcons have not allowed a goal against any opponent in the MAC Commonwealth tournament.

#2 York College (NPI Rank: 30th)
York College earned the second seed in the MAC Commonwealth tournament with a 5-1-1 record in MAC Commonwealth play. The Spartans finished the regular season with an impressive 13-1-5 overall record. York opened the season with a 10-0-4 record before suffering its first and only loss of the year to Messiah, 4-0, on October 19th. York has won its final three games of the regular season heading into the semifinal.

#3 Widener University (NPI Rank: 127th)
Widener University earned the #3 seed following a 4-2-1 record in MAC Commonwealth play. The Pride's losses came against Messiah and Alvernia, and Widener also tied York. The Pride finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-6-4, and Widener had some momentum entering conference play with a 2-0 win over Salisbury in the game before MAC play began. Widener defeated Easter, 4-2, in the regular season finale to earn the #3 seed.
