Golden Wolves Take Two From Eagles, Secure Series Sweep

St. Davids, Pa (April 6, 2024) - Alvernia University (16-9, 9-3) scored 21 runs in two games en route to the series sweep of Eastern University (11-13, 4-7) in a MAC Commonwealth baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Eastern. 

The Golden Wolves grabbed game one by a score of 16-6 after scoring ten runs in the final three innings of the game. Nick Ferraioli then hurled eight scoreless innings in game two as the Golden Wolves secured the series sweep of the Eagles with a 5-2 victory.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia jumped out to another early lead in game two of the MAC Commonwealth series against the Eagles with a four spot in the top half of the first inning. Jason Kelly started things off with a sacrifice fly that plated Quincy Esannason and then Jake Chapman was able to score via an Eastern error to make it 2-0. 
  • Bobby Hansen then poked a two RBI double into the right center gap to score Matt Edwards and Mike Ramundo to give Alvernia the 4-0 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves kept it rolling in the second when Ramundo ripped a double to left center to score Logan Nelson and then Ramundo and Kelly executed a 1st and 3rd steal to score Ramundo and push the Alvernia lead to six. 
  • Eastern cut into the Alvernia lead in the home half of the second with a two run homer to left center that made it 6-2. 
  • The Eagles continued to chip away at the Alvernia lead and tallied two more in the third inning thanks to a sacrifice fly and a RBI single up the middle to pull within two, 6-4. 
  • Eastern leveled the score at six in the fourth after two RBI singles as the Eagles posted two runs in three consecutive innings to tie the game. 
  • The Golden Wolves responded in the top half of the fifth inning after Hansen ripped his second RBI double of the game to give Alvernia the 7-6 lead. 
  • Jason Lind then followed Hansen up with a two RBI single through the left side to score Edwards and Hansen to push it to a three run, 9-6 lead. 
  • Edwards tacked two more runs on in the sixth with a two RBI single into left field to make it an 11-6 ballgame. 
  • The Golden Wolves then posted five more insurance runs in the top half of the seventh to push the lead to ten. Lind started things off with a solo homer to center before Ramundo tallied an RBI groundout to make it 13-6. 
  • Kelly followed with an RBI double to left that scored Nelson and then Edwards belted his second homer of the series to put the game out of reach for the Eagles. 
  • Matt Mays shut Eastern down in the home half of the seventh to secure the 16-6 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia got on the board first in the second inning after Edwards was able to score after an Eastern error to give the Golden Wolves the early 1-0 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves then tallied four runs in the fourth inning to push it to a 5-0 lead. Kelly belted a solo shot to center to get things going and then Nelson tallied an RBI single to make it 3-0. 
  • Garrett Hunter then recorded a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Timmy Hitchcock to score and then Chapman poked an RBI single through the right side to score Nelson and give Alvernia the five run advantage. 
  • Nick Ferraioli started on the mound for the Golden Wolves and shut down the Eagles and did not allow a run through the eight innings he pitched. 
  • The Eagles tallied two in the bottom of the ninth after an Alvernia error and a RBI groundout but it was not enough as the Golden Wolves grabbed game two 5-2 and secured the series sweep of the Eagles.

Of Note 
  • The series victory over the Eagles marks the third straight MAC Commonwealth series the Golden Wolves have won after dropping their conference opener to Messiah, 2-1.
