Alvernia Sweeps Moravian in Season Opener

Wayne, Pa (February 22, 2025) - Alvernia University (2-0) grabbed both games over Moravian University (0-2) Saturday afternoon in a season opening non-conference baseball doubleheader hosted by Moravian at Archbishop Carroll High School.

The Golden Wolves took game one by a score of 4-3 behind a two RBI performance from Evan Thomas. Alvernia then grabbed game two of the doubleheader, 7-2, to secure the sweep of the Greyhounds.

Game 1: Moravian: 3, Alvernia: 4

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves opened up the scoring in the top of the first after Evan Thomas tallied an RBI groundout that scored Quincy Esannason to give Alvernia the early 1-0 lead.
  • Moravian struck back in the fourth inning with two runs to swing the lead in favor of the Greyhounds. A bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to center field plated both runs for Moravian to grab the 2-1 lead after four innings.
  • Alvernia responded in the top of the sixth after a Mike Mele RBI single scored Thomas to level the game at two.
  • The Golden Wolves tallied two more runs in the top of the seventh inning when Thomas scored Esannason once again, this time on an RBI single to left field that made it a 3-2 game. Thomas then drew a throwing error by the Moravian catcher in an attempt to steal second that allowed Jake Chapman to score and give Alvernia the 4-2 advantage.
  • The Greyhounds responded with an RBI single into center in the bottom half of the seventh to pull within one, 4-3 after seven frames.
  • Matt Mays came on late in the seventh inning and shut down the Greyhounds in the eighth inning and worked his way out of a bases loaded jam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 4-3 victory for the Golden Wolves and earn the save.
