Alvernia's Offense Erupts In Sunday Sweep of Red Devils

Carlisle, Pa. (March 23, 2025) Alvernia University (11-9) combined for 22 hits and 18 runs as the offense came alive in a Sunday sweep of Dickinson College (8-8) on Sunday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Dickinson College.

The Golden Wolves used 14 hits to score 14 runs in a 14-3 win over the Red Devils in game one of the Sunday doubleheader. Alvernia then scattered eight hits for four runs in a 4-0 shutout of Dickinson in game two, marking Alvernia's first shutout win of the season

Game One: Alvernia 14, Dickinson 3 (6 inn.)
Hits: Alvernia 14, Dickinson 8
Errors: Alvernia 0, Dickinson 4
WP: Ryann Healey (3-1)    LP: Erin McMahon (2-2)

How it Happened
  • Alvernia loaded the bases with three straight walks to lead off the game in the top of the first. Angelina Sponheimer then drove in Alexia Fitzgerald and Mady Polonsky with a single up the middle, and Summer Montgomery drove in Brooke Hauck with a single to center for the 3-0. Jaclyn Barbera then drove in Sponheimer on a fielder's choice, and Taylor McClain scored on a Dickinson error on the play to give Alvernia the 5-0 lead through the top of the first.
  • The Golden Wolves gave one back in the bottom of the first on a two-out single, but Alvernia made up for it in the top of the second. Both Polonsky and Hauck recorded back-to-back singles, and Sponheimer drove in Polonsky with a single up the middle for the 6-1 lead. Alvernia threatened to add more with the bases loaded later in the inning, but the Red Devils got out of the threat.
  • Alvernia then made it a 10-1 game in the top of the third. Lauren Jascewsky got on with a one-out single, and she came home on the next at-bat on a Fitzgerald double down the left field line. Polonsky walked later in the inning to put two runners on, and Sponheimer drove in Polonsky with a single to center. McClain then reached on a fielding error, allowing Polonsky to score, and Montgomery capped off the inning with a single to the left gap to bring in Sponheimer and give Alvernia the 10-1 lead.
  • The Red Devils got one back in the fourth and one back in the fifth to make it a 10-3 game and keep it going into the sixth. But, Alvernia tacked on four more in the sixth to put the Red Devils away. Montgomery led off the inning by reaching on an error, and Allie Cirigliano joined her on base with a pinch-hit single. After Ryann Healey advanced them both on a sacrifice bunt, Jascewsky drove them both in on a single to right field. Alvernia loaded the bases later in the inning following singles from Fitzgerald and Polonsky. Hauck then drove in Jascewsky on a sacrifice fly, and Fitzgerald scored on an error during Sponheimer's at-bat to cap off the inning and make it a 14-3 game.
  • Alvernia did not allow a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth as the Golden Wolves took the win in six innings, 14-3.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves struck first in the top of the first. Polonsky reached base on an infield single. After Polonsky stole second to get into scoring position, McClain drove her home later in the inning on a two-out single to left field to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.
  • Alvernia tacked on three more in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead. After Sponheimer and Hauck reached on singles, they both scored during an outfield error on the at-bat of Payton Splain. Splain then scored on an RBI single from Jascewsky to give Alvernia the 4-0 lead.
  • Alvernia's defense, behind Ashlynn Hillanbrand in the circle, did not allow a hit from the Red Devils until the fourth inning. Dickinson didn't put its first runner in scoring position until the fifth, but Alvernia got the runner out on a fielder's choice at third base. The Red Devils threatened Alvernia's shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out triple. But, Kelsey Racine - who came in in relief in the sixth - struck out the next batter for the second out, and forced a groundout at third to end the game and secure Alvernia's 4-0 win.
