Golden Wolves Split With Mustangs

Owings Mills, Md. (April 13, 2025) - Alvernia University (17-15, 3-7) split with Stevenson University (19-7, 6-4) Sunday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader at Stevenson.

The Golden Wolves took game one of the doubleheader by a score of 7-4 but the Mustangs bounced back with a 5-4 walk off victory in game two to secure the weekend split.

Game One: Alvernia 7, Stevenson 4
Hits: Alvernia 9, Stevenson 11
Errors: Alvernia 0, Stevenson 1
WP: Natalie Berwick (4-1) LP: Angelica Gurevich (7-2) S: Kelsey Racine (1)

How it Happened
  • The Mustangs led 2-0 through three innings after plating a run in both the first and third innings.
  • Stevenson held the 2-0 lead until the fifth inning when Alvernia put up a five spot to take the lead and then some. Alvernia loaded the bases without an out and a walk by Payton Splain brought in Alvernia's first runner of the inning. Later in the inning, with the bases still loaded and two outs on the board, Brooke Hauck hit a bases-clearing double to give Alvernia the 4-2 lead. Stevenson made a pitching change, but Alvernia added one more run with Taylor McClain driving in Hauck on a single to center to give Alvernia the 5-2 lead.
  • The Golden Wolves tacked on two more in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Alexia Fitzgerald drove in Jaclyn Barbera on an infield groundout. Summer Montgomery then drove in Mady Polonsky on a single through the left side to give Alvernia the 7-2 lead.
  • The Mustangs got two back in their half of the sixth on back-to-back singles to make it a 7-4 game going into the seventh. Alvernia did not allow the Mustangs to threaten in the seventh as the Golden Wolves took the 7-4 game one win.

Game Two: Alvernia 4, Stevenson 5
Hits: Alvernia 12, Stevenson 15
Errors: Alvernia 1, Stevenson 1
WP: Alexis Kirkessner (7-4) LP: Kelsey Racine (6-6)

How it Happened
  • Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Angelina Sponheimer driving in Hauck on a single to left field. But, the Mustangs tied it up at 1-1  in their half of the first on a single to center.
  • The Golden Wolves threatened to break the tie in the top of the second with two on and one out. But, the Mustangs made back-to-back plays at third base to end the threat. Stevenson then broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to left field to take the 2-1 lead.
  • After a scoreless third and fourth innings for both sides, Alvernia retook the lead in the fifth. Fitzgerald hit a leadoff triple to open the inning, and she was driven home on the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly to center by Montgomery to tie the game at 2-2. The Golden Wolves then broke the tie on a Sponheimer double to score Hauck and give Alvernia the 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Golden Wolves added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after a Fitzgerald infield single scored Gianna Ordanoff and pushed the Alvernia lead to two, 4-2.
  • The Mustangs responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game up at four after a two RBI single to right field.
  • A scoreless seventh for both Alvernia and Stevenson sent the game into the top of the eighth level at four apiece and both teams were unable to break the tie in the eighth, so it headed to the top of the ninth tied at four.
  • The Mustangs walked it off in the bottom of the ninth inning after an RBI double to right field scored the game winning run and secured the 5-4 victory.
