Golden Wolves Complete Sweep Against Mustangs, 5-3

Owing Mills, MD (April 14, 2025) - Alvernia University (20-11,12-3) used situational hitting and strong pitching to complete a key MAC Commonwealth series sweep over Stevenson University (8-24, 3-12) Monday afternoon in Maryland.

Alvernia completed the series sweep with a 5-3 win, scoring in three innings on five hits. The Golden Wolves offense was powered behind a three hit performance from Evan Thomas. While the Mustangs were able to put together 10 hits, another strong performance from the Alvernia pitching staff was able to limit the damage and secure the victory.

The Golden Wolves have now swept four straight conference series and are one game back of Messiah with two series to go in the regular season.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia struck first in the second inning, Evan Thomas started things off with a double in the left center gap. Thomas later scored on a Jack Zabarksy RBI groundout to short.
  • The Golden Wolves tacked on another run in the top half of the third. Christopher Babkowski led off the inning with a walk. After a hit-by-pitch and a Stevenson error, Babkowski came around to score to make it 2-0.
  • Tyler Weil-Kaspar started for the Golden Wolves on the mound and blanked the Mustangs through four shutout innings, allowing two hits, no runs, and striking out six.
  • Stevenson later answered in the home half of the fifth with a two RBI single to left field, knotting the game at 2-2.
  • Alvernia got those runs right back the next half inning. Quincy Esannason led the top half off with a walk, coming around to score after Thomas drove a single to left field.
  • The Golden Wolves were not done yet. Harold Ivery III delivered a clutch pinch hit RBI double to left field and Timmy Hitchcock delivered a SAC fly to center field to end the frame with a 5-2 lead for Alvernia.
  • The Mustangs got one of those runs right back in the top of the sixth. A successful safety squeeze made the score 5-3 heading into the seventh.
  • The final three innings both teams remained scoreless. A bullpen trio of Michael Andrew, Matt Mays, and Brad Coley got the job done allowing only one hit each.
