Golden Wolves Drop Doubleheader to Eagles

St. Davids, Pa. (April 4,2025) - Alvernia University (14-14, 2-6) dropped both games in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader against Eastern University (19-5, 8-0) Saturday afternoon at Eastern.

The Eagles took game one of the doubleheader by a score of 8-7 after a back and forth game. Eastern then secured the series sweep with a 13-4 victory over the Golden Wolves in game two.

Game One:
Score: Eastern 8, Alvernia 7
Hits: Eastern 9, Alvernia 10
Errors: Eastern 2, Alvernia 1
WP: Danika Barthol (8-2)  LP: Kelsey Racine (5-5)

How It Happened
  • Alvernia struck first in the opening frame. Summer Montgomery got things started with a one out single to center field. Brooke Hauck then stepped up and clobbered a two run homer to left to give the Golden Wolves an early 2-0 lead
  • Eastern later answered back in the home half of the second inning. The Eagles strung together a two out rally and took control after a 2 RBI double to left field and a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
  • Eastern extended its lead, 4-2, in the bottom half of the third thanks to a solo home run to left field
  • Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Alvernia was able to plate five runs. Payton Splain got things going with a leadoff walk, then an Eastern error followed by a Summer Montgomery bunt loaded the bases for the Golden Wolves.
  • Hauck then stepped up to the plate and delivered her second homer of the game - a grand slam to center field - to put the Golden Wolves out in front with a 6-4 lead.
  • Alvernia was not done there, starting things right back up with a Taylor McClain infield single. Another Eastern error allowed McClain to advance all the way to third base, setting up Mady Polonsky for a SAC fly to left to give Alvernia the 7-4 lead.
  • Eastern was able to grab the lead back in the bottom of the sixth, responding with four runs of its own after a 2 RBI single through the left side and a 2 RBI double to left center gave the Eagles an 8-7 lead heading into the final frame.
  • The Golden Wolves were able to get the tying run to base in the top of the seventh, but Eastern got out of the threat to secure the 8-7 win.
