NEWARK, NJ (October 20, 2005) – Sophomore midfielder Alison Phillips (Buena, NJ/Buena HS) had two goals, freshman forward Jess Sapienza (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) chipped in a goal and two assists and sophomore forward Alex Gastulo (Little Ferry, NJ/ Passaic Valley) had a goal and an assist as Rutgers-Newark did all of its scoring against Alvernia in the second half of a 5-0 non-conference women’s soccer game under the lights on Alumni Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) needed just two first-half saves to give her the Scarlet Raider career complete-match shutout record with eight, breaking a tie she held with senior keeper Ashley Woodruff (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield).
Phillips, who now has 11 goals this season, scored what proved to be the game winner on a breakaway run ignited by a through pass from beyond midfield by Gastulo in the 53rd minute. Sophomore midfielder Morgan Zimm (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) headed in a corner serve from senior forward Amanda Beck (Belmar, NJ/Red Bank Regional) three minutes later to give the Raiders some breathing room.
Then Sapienza assisted on back-to-back goals by Gastulo in the 68th minute and Phillips in the 81st minute before closing out the scoring with a breakaway score of her own with just 3:15 left.
It was the second largest goal total of the season for Rutgers-Newark, trailing only a 9-goal explosion at St. Joseph’s College of Vermont in early September.
Alvernia freshman goalkeeper Danielle Fitzpatrick posted seven saves while facing 20 shots. All five of the Crusaders’ shots came in the opening half when the teams battled to a stalemate.
The win snapped a four-match losing streak by Rutgers-Newark which improved to 5-10-1. The Crusaders are now 3-13-1.
