Ross’ Free Kick Leads Alvernia Past Wesley, 2-1

Junior Scores From 20 Yards In Final Three Minutes

Box Score

Reading, PA (Oct. 5, 2005) – Junior defender Lisa Ross (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) curled in a 20-yard free kick with under three minutes to play giving Alvernia College a 2-1 win over Wesley College in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Schlager Memorial Field.

Alvernia scored the first goal of the game just six seconds prior to halftime.  Freshman defender Kerry Matthews (Staten Island, NY/Saint John Villa Acad.) served a long ball from midfield that hopped right to sophomore Laura-Beth Diggs (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) and her chip found the back of the net not a moment too soon.

The Crusaders (3-10-1, 2-4-1 PAC) held the lead until Ross was whistled for a foul in the box giving the Wolverines (5-5, 1-3 PAC) a penalty kick in the 65th minute.  Junior Carolyn Adair (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) slapped the free kick in on the right side to knot the score at 1-1.  Both teams had chances over the next 20 minutes, the best perhaps a Kristina Bittner (Boothwyn, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) half volley that caromed off the cross bar.

The Wolverines were whistled for a pushing foul near the right sideline with three minutes to play and Ross drove home the shot out of the reach of sophomore goalie Brittany Block (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside).

Alvernia will travel to Rutgers-Newark this Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game under the lights.
