Reading, PA (Oct. 29, 2005) - The Crusaders did not have much time to consider its Friday night “flash and fade," as Saturday night offered a chance at redemption against a formidable Frostburg State.
Once again the Vern jumped to a quick and commanding 4-1 lead as Ryan Kelly had a “natural” hat trick in the first period. Possessing great speed and excellent stickwork Kelly made easy work of two break-aways finishing his third with a text book backhand topshelf. Alvernia slowly squandered the lead and entered the final period clinging to a 5-4 advantage. Once again penalties would open the door for a Frostburg goal. leaving a deflated Crusader team to fight for a hard earned tie. Goaltender Chris Medico played outstanding both nights and the defensive unit lead by freshman Michael Gilmore helped preserve the 5-5 tie with a tireless effort on a late game short handed two man disadvantage. Coach O’Connell was impressed by his talented freshman line of Bruce Hawthorne and Bill Heller which combined with the freshman defensive additions of Brent Reed and Chris Bell to give promise to a new look Ice Hockey program.
