Gonzalez Leads Montclair St. Over Newport News, 82-52, In Masano Opener

Senior Forward Scores 32 Including A Perfect 11-for-11 Free Throws

Reading, PA (Nov. 18, 2005) – Senior forward Gian Paul Gonzalez (N. Haledon, NJ/Manchester Reg.) scored a game-high 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Montclair St. to an 82-52 win over Newport News in the opening game of the Tom Masano Auto Group Tip Off Men’s Basketball Tournament Friday evening at the Physical Education Center.

            The Red Hawks (1-0) scored the final seven points of the first half to take a 36-30 lead at the break, and opened the second half on a 21-5 run to put the game out of reach.  Gonzalez scored 12 points over the stretch and freshman Jonathan Arthur (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) scored five of his 15 early in the second half and finished the game with a game-high 12 rebounds.

            Montclair St. held an early five point lead, 16-11, with 8:42 gone by and pushed the gap to as many as seven in the first half on an Arthur Elam (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) free throw that put the Red Hawks up 22-15 at the 8:39 mark.  Newport News ran off 10 of the next 11 to take a two point lead with 4:55 left in the opening half and three minutes later ran off five straight to erase a four point deficit before the Red Hawks started the run that put the game away.

            Freshman guard Fred Spratley (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond River) scored 15 points to lead the Builders (0-1) and Charles Holiday (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) threw in 14 on 6-of-16 shooting.  Newport News will play Penn State Berks in Saturday’s consolation at 1:00 p.m.  Alvernia College, a 79-66 winner over Berks, will face Montclair St. in the Championship game at 3:00.
