Big First Half Leads Penn State Berks Past Newport News, 94-80

Five Different Lions Reach Double Digits

Reading, PA (Nov. 19, 2005) – Penn State Berks doubled up Newport News, 42-21, in the first half en route to a 94-80 win in the consolation game of the Tom Masano Auto Group Men’s Basketball Tournament hosted by Alvernia College Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Center.

            Berks freshman Seward Joway (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) scored 13 of his team-high 23 during the opening frame as the Lions (1-1) ripped off a 51 percent shooting effort over the opening 20 minutes while holding Newport News (0-2) to just 26 percent from the floor.  Newport News senior Charles Holiday (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) scored just nine of his game-high 30 points during the first half.  Holiday and Joway represented their respective schools on the All-Tournament Team.

            Berks opened the game with eight straight points and pushed its early lead to nine points, 15-6, with just over five minutes gone.  Newport rallied with back-to-back buckets to pull within five, but Berks responded with 13 of the next 15 points to take a 16 point lead, 28-12, with 7:44 left in the first.  The lead grew to as many as 23 points for the Lions who settled for the 21-point lead at the break.

            The Lions built the lead to 27 points early in the second half and cruised to their first victory of the season.  Newport News, making its first appearance in the Alvernia College season-opening tournament finished 0-2 while the Lions, who first appeared in the tournament last season, pick up their first win in four attempts.
