BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2006) – Three seniors figured into the decision on senior day at Alvernia College Wednesday as Lisa Sothern (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) assisted on a goal by Liz Gallagher (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) and goalie Katie Einsel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) made six saves to lead Alvernia to a 1-0 win over Rutgers-Newark in non-conference women’s soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Sothern pushed a through ball into the left side of the box that Gallagher collected and drove home past RNU goalie Katie Hastings. The Crusaders (7-6-2), who tallied nine of their 13 shots before the break, continued to pressure Hastings in the opening frame, but could not break through with an insurance goal.
Rutgers-Newark turned up its offensive press into the later parts of the second half testing Einsel who was up to the task every time. Einsel was quick off her line to swallow up long passes from the midfield on a few occasions and denied a shot from point blank range in the final 15 minutes of play. The senior keeper recorded her second straight shutout as the Crusaders blanked an opponent for the fourth time in the last five games.
Alvernia will take a week off before closing the regular season with a trip across town to Albright College next Thursday.
