BALTIMORE – Alvernia College rallied to win the fourth and fifth games, defeating host College of Notre Dame of Maryland, 30-18, 24-30, 26-30, 30-25, 15-13, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match.
The Crusaders (8-7) hit .268 and .276, in the final two games, their best outputs of the match.
Notre Dame (11-19) trailed most of the fourth game before tying the score at 22 on a service ace by junior setter Emmy Williams (Baltimore, Md./Towson High School). Alvernia’s Amy Sikorski, however, put away a kill for sideout, then Jennifer Stigura served three-straight points to put the Crusaders ahead, 26-23.
Alvernia then took a 5-0 lead in the fifth match before Notre Dame sophomore outside hitter Kimberly Myers (Elkton, Md./Elkton High School) logged three-consecutive kills, and the Gators cut the deficit to 5-3.
Alvernia again went ahead by five, 10-5, but Notre Dame rallied to close the game to one, 12-11, before the Crusaders closed out the match.
Sikorski led all players with 23 kills. Lauren Crimi had 53 assists for the Crusaders, and Stigura added 19 kills and eight aces.
Myers paced the Gators with 23 kills, while junior middle blocker Stephanie Ambrose (Baltimore, Md./The Catholic High School of Baltimore) and sophomore outside hitter Lara Tomaszewski (Severn, Md./Old Mill High School) each had 16 kills.
Alvernia will return home to face Cabrini College on Tuesday.
