BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 4, 2006) – Senior forward Cody Gambler (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) headed home a perfect cross from sophomore defender Chad Quinter (Exeter, PA/Exeter) nine minute into overtime to give Alvernia a 1-0 win over Moravian College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men’s soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Alvernia (9-2-1) picked up its fourth straight win and ninth in the last 10 games. The Crusaders have won five times by shutout this season and are off to the best start in school history. The 2004 team started the season 5-3.
Alvernia held a clear offensive advantage posting 14 shots to the Greyhounds (2-9-1) two, both of which were registered in the first half. The hosts rattled off seven shots in the second half and Gambler scored on the third effort in overtime. Moravian keeper Chris Nederostek (Lansdale, PA/Christopher Dock) made seven saves in just under 99 minutes, while Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) stopped two in his fifth shutout of the season.
Quinter placed a free kick down near the right corner and served a ball just inside the six-yard box and Gambler made no mistake burying his fourth goal of the season.
The Crusaders will return to the conference schedule on Saturday when they visit conference power Arcadia for a 3:00 p.m. game.
