Dover, DE (March 28, 2006) – Alvernia College posted a five-run inning as part of a 9-0 win in the opener and a four run inning en route to a 5-2 win in game two of a doubleheader sweep of Wesley College Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference softball action at duPont Field.
Freshman pitcher Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity BVM) threw a one-hitter with a pair of strikeouts in game one and homered to start the four-run second inning in game two. Sophomore Beth Jablonowski (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) picked up the win for Alvernia in game two.
Alvernia scored five times on five hits and a pair of walks in the third inning of game one to break a scoreless tie. Suzanne Fox (Glassboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) started the inning with free passes and after a pair of outs, the Crusaders rattled off five straight hits including a two-run double from freshman designated player Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame).
The Crusaders pushed the lead to 9-0 with two unearned runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Game one was halted by the 8-run mercy rule when Wesley failed to score in the bottom of the fifth.
Williams gave up the Wolverines’ only hit of the game, a two-out single in the second inning.
Wesley opened the scoring in the first inning of game two on a single, a double, and a one-out sacrifice fly. Williams got the run right back for Alvernia leading off the second with a solo homerun. Crimi followed with a double and after back-to-back singles, Hollie Dobson (Tallytown, PA/Pennsbury) lifted a sacrifice fly to left. After a groundout, Fox ripped a two-out triple to force home the fourth run of the inning.
Alvernia scored its fifth run in the fifth and Wesley scored the final run of the day in the home half of the fifth.
Shannon Higgins (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickan) and Colleen Ambrosius (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) both went 3-for-6 on the day with two runs scored each for the Crusaders. Williams collected three hits in seven at-bats.
