BOX SCORE
Reading, PA (April 11, 2006) – Alvernia College scored 12 runs over three innings and held off a late rally in a 12-8 win over Marywood University Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action at Alvernia.
Alvernia starter Billy Moore (Cochranville, PA/Octorara) threw six strong innings giving up one run on seven hits while striking out three. Moore, who earned a win in his first decision of the year, lowered his season ERA to 2.05. Junior Chris Raniere (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) went 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs and smacked a long two-run home run to left during a four-run fifth.
Alvernia opened the scoring with five runs in the fourth on four hits, a walk, and a Marywood error. Senior Eric Bonds (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) singled to open the inning and scored on a Raniere single. Steve Burdan (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) followed with a run-scoring single and after a fielder’s choice and an error, Edwin Tavarez (Reading, PA/Reading) chased home two more with a two-out double.
Marywood scored its only run off Moore in the fifth on a two-out home run from senior Chris Lewis (Scranton, PA/Bishop Hannan).
Alvernia got that run back and more with four in the home half of the fifth. Bonds opened the inning with a triple and Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) and Jason Zeigler (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) followed with back-to-back RBI doubles before Raniere unloaded on a long shot over the left field fence for a 9-1 win.
The hosts added three more runs in the sixth punctuated by a Raniere two-out, two-run double, and Pete Fernandez (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) relieved Moore to start the seventh.
After a Marywood single, Fernandez recorded the first out of the inning with a fielder’s choice ground ball to short, but gave up a two-run home run to Christopher Ritchie (Meriden, CT/Orville H. Platt) before closing the inning with a groundout and a strikeout.
Marywood scored two more runs in the eighth on four straight singles and pushed three across in the ninth on four hits off Burdan, but got no closer as Burdan stranded a pair of runners with a strikeout and a lineout.
Alvernia and Marywood will continue the three-game series in Scranton on Wednesday starting at noon.
