SCRANTON, PA - Alvernia College completed a season sweep of Marywood
University with 8-1 and 20-5 wins in PAC baseball action Wednesday afternoon
in Scranton. The Crusaders improved to 18-10 (7-5 PAC) while the Pacers
fall to 15-13 (5-6 PAC).
Steve Burdan (Pottstown/Pottstown) led the visitors in the opener, going 3-4
with 2-RBI. Alvernia jumped out to a 4-0 lead by plating three runs in the
third thanks in part to Burdan's 2-run double to right field. The
Crusaders, despite giving up a run in the bottom half of the third, added
four more insurance runs in the fifth to cruise to the 8-1 win. Ryan Mark
(Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen) went 3-5 with an RBI, while five other Crusaders
also batted in runs on the day. Susquehannock product Tim Frisch (4-1) got
the win after pitching six solid innings, striking out four while scattering
nine hits. Greg Cleary (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) took the loss for the
Pacers, but only allowed three earned runs in six innings of work, striking
out five. Christopher Ritchie (Meriden, CT/Orville H. Platt) went 2-3 for
Marywood while Ryan Clark (Scranton/Scranton) went 3-4 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, Alvernia exploded offensively, plating two in the first,
three in the second, four in the fourth, five in the fifth an, two in the
sixth and four in the seventh as the Crusaders cruised to a 20-5 win. #Zach
Lutz# (Mohnton/Governor Mifflin), Jason Zeigler (Mohnton/Governor Mifflin)
and Burdan each plated three-RBI in the Crusader win. Lutz finished the day
3-4 with four runs scored while Zeigler crossed the plate three times on his
3-4 day. Lutz, Billy Moore (Cochranville/Octorara), Chris Raniere
(Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) and Burdan each had doubles, with Burdan
smacking two on the day. Not to be outdone, Eric Bonds (Lancaster/Penn
Manor) went 3-6 with a triple, four runs scored and an RBI.
Jeremy Hess (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) improved to 2-1 after pitching five
innings of relief for the Crusaders, striking out three while only allowing
four hits. Marywood's Ralph Protano (Manalapan, NJ/Colts Neck) was credited
with the loss after giving up nine earned runs on Crusader hits over four
innings of work. Aaron Vincent (Stillwater/Benton) allowed two earned runs
in three innings of relief work for Marywood. Chris Lewis (Scranton/Bishop
Hannan) and Ryan Clark each went 2-3 with an RBI for the Pacers.
