Reading, PA (April 9, 2006) – Junior Jason Zeigler (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) pitched six innings in the opener and earned his fifth win of the season as Alvernia College split a doubleheader with Wesley College Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action at Alvernia.

Zeigler allowed one run on eight hits and struck out four as the Crusaders prevailed 5-1.  Juniors Chris Raniere (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) and Scott Schuler (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) each collected two hits in the opener.  Ben Reifsnyder (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson) scored twice and knocked in two more for the Crusaders.

In game two, Wesley took advantage of a pair of Alvernia miscues to plate four unearned runs in a 7-4 win.  Rainere collected two more hits in game two and sophomore Steve Burdan (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) homered twice and drove in three runs.

Alvernia opened the day with two runs on three hits and an error in the second inning of game one.  Rainere doubled with one out and scored when Reifsnyder reached on an error.  Sophomore leadoff hitter Tim Carroll (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning to force in the second run.

The hosts put two more on the board in the fourth on RBI hits from Schuler and Eric Focht (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) and the fifth run of the game in the fifth.

Zeigler erased runners in each of the first two innings on inning-ending double plays and surrendered the only run in the fifth on three straight singles and a sacrifice fly.  Zeigler allowed at least one runner in each inning, but pitched out of trouble.  Sophomore reliever Andrew Long (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) pitched a perfect seventh to close out the game.

Wesley plated a pair of unearned runs to start game two.  Alvernia cut the lead in half with a run in the home half of the first on a Rainere RBI single, but stranded a pair with a chance to tie the score.  Wesley scored once in the third aided by a pair of past balls and went up 4-1 with a run on three hits in the fourth.

Burdan pulled Alvernia within a run, 4-3 with a two-run home run to start the fourth and homered again in the sixth, but that was all the Crusaders could muster as the Wolverines earned the split.

Alvernia will host Marywood University on Tuesday to start another conference series.

Game One:  Alvernia 5, Wesley 1
Game Two: Wesley 7, Alvernia 4
