BOX SCORE

Wayne, N.J. (Sept. 26, 2006) – The Alvernia College offense was up to its usual tricks, and for three straight games the defense has been equally impressive as the Crusaders posted their third straight shutout with a 2-0 win at #20 William Paterson Tuesday evening in non-conference field hockey action.

Seniors Becky Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) and Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) once again provided the offense as Alvernia improved to 32-4 all-time with both players score at least one goal.  Sophomore Mandy Yocum (Morgantown, PA/Twin Valley) made five saves to run her personal shutout streak to 181:42.  The Crusaders overall shutout streak is now 235:29 with Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) currently boasting her own streak of 55:29.

Macchione opened the scoring for the Crusaders in the sixth minute of play converting a pass from Novogratz.  Alvernia held a 1-0 lead at the break and Novogratz toss home the insurance goal assisted by Lauren Yoder (Fleetwood, PA/Oley Valley) in the 52nd minute.

After an even first half with two shots for each team, Alvernia posted a 9-4 advantage in shots in the second half for an 11-6 overall lead.  The Crusaders earned 14 corners to the Pioneer’s seven.  WPU keeper Grace Browne made nine saves for the hosts.  WPU was ranked #20 in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll this past week.

Alvernia will return to north Jersey this weekend to play another non-conference match at FDU-Florham on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
