BOX SCORE
Hampden-Sydney, Va. (Sept. 2, 2006) – In a game that was closer than the final score would indicate, Lynchburg College tallied five second-half goals to take a 6-1 win over Alvernia College Saturday afternoon in first-day action at the Arby’s Men’s Soccer Classic hosted by Hampden Sydney College.
Alvernia held the Hornets’ offense to just one shot in the first half, but an own goal by the Crusaders (0-1) in the 11th minute gave Lynchburg a 1-0 lead at the break. Alvernia totaled six shots in the first, but three saves from Lynchburg keeper Marcus Jordan kept the Crusaders off the board.
Alvernia senior Zach Naylon (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) scored in the 74th minute to cut the second-half deficit to 3-1, but the Lynchburg offense answered with three goals in a four minute stretch to put the game away.
Both teams earned three corner kicks and Lynchburg, with 10 second-half shots, held an 11-10 advantage in shots. Alvernia sophomore Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) made two saves in net for the Crusaders who will face host Hampden Sydney on day two of the classic Sunday afternoon.
