(March 13, 2007) – Junior starter Pete Fernandez (Waldwick, NJ/Bogota) threw six strong innings and Chris Raniere (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) continued his hot hitting with two hits and two RBIs as Alvernia snapped a three-game skid with a 6-3 win over Wheaton (Mass.) in non-conference baseball action at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
Alvernia plated three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth giving Fernandez a 6-2 lead when he left after six innings having given up five hits and one walk while striking out three. The Alvernia defense committed three errors leading to all three unearned runs.
Junior Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) joined Raniere with a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman outfielder Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) also delivered a pair of runs and was 1-for-4 at the plate.
Billy Moore (Cochranville, PA/Octorara) pitched an inning of scoreless relief striking out two batters. Sophomore Andrew Long (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) picked up his second save of the trip striking out the side in a scoreless ninth.
Raniere is now 8-for-19 on the trip with four runs scored and 10 RBIs. Alvernia faces Montclair St. on Wednesday afternoon in Arizona.
