BOX SCORE

Center Valley, Pa. (Apr. 11, 2007) – Alvernia College scored single runs in each of the last three innings for a come-from-behind 13-12 win over DeSales University Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Butz Field.

Alvernia junior Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) smashed his seventh homer of the season with one out in the seventh, and Edwin Tavarez (Reading, PA/Reading), who finished the day 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, singled, stole second and scored on a Tim Carroll (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan) double to tie the score at 12-all in the eighth.

Junior Steve Burdan (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) reached on an error to start the ninth and scored on a bases loaded fielder’s choice by Tavarez.  Junior Andrew Long (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) pitched a scoreless eighth and induced a game-ending groundout with the potential winning run on second base in the ninth.

DeSales jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a first inning, 3-run homer off the bat of freshman Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades).  Alvernia cut the lead to 3-2 with RBI base hits from Dale Curry (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) and Tavarez in the second, but DSU scored three more in the second for a 6-2 lead.

Alvernia, which scored in seven of the last eight innings, plated two in the third on three singles and one DeSales error.  The host Bulldogs committed four errors on the day to six by the Crusaders.

Alvernia tacked on three more runs in the fourth to knot the score at 7-7 and both teams put three runs on the board in the fifth for a 10-10 tie after five innings.  DeSales opened the home half of the sixth with three straight hits to post a pair of runs and take a 12-10 lead, but the Bulldog offense went silent for the final three innings as Alvernia mounted its comeback.

Both teams finished the day with 15 hits each.

Alvernia will host conference foe Wesley College Friday to start a 3-game weekend series with the Wolverines.
