Reading, Pa. (Apr. 13, 2007) – Senior pitcher Jason Zeigler (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) threw seven strong innings to pick up his fifth win of the season and freshman designated hitter Chris Simoncini (East Berlin, PA/Bermudian Springs) knocked in four runs as Alvernia College defeated Wesley College 9-4 Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action at Alvernia.
Zeigler, the Crusaders career leader in wins with 29, struck out eight and gave up just two runs on six hits. Wesley tied the score at 2-2 with a run in the fifth, but Alvernia regained the lead with a run in the sixth and Simoncini put the game out of reach with a three-run homer in the seventh.
The Crusaders (19-7, 10-3 PAC) tacked on three more runs in the eighth after Wesley (21-9, 9-4 PAC) had cut the lead to 6-4 with two in the top of the eighth. Simoncini finished the day with two hits, a run scored, and the four RBI. Junior leadoff Tim Carroll (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan) also collected two hits and scored twice.
Alvernia and Wesley will continue the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader in Dover, Del.
