Dover, Del. (Apr. 14, 2007) – Wesley College scored five runs in the first two innings of game one and capped the doubleheader with a three-run, walk-off homer in game two in a 6-2 and 5-4 sweep of Alvernia College Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action at Bob Reed Field.

Wesley (23-9, 11-4 PAC) took a 5-0 lead in the opener getting eight of its 10 game-one hits in the first two innings.  Alvernia, which finished with five hits in each game, scored once in the third inning of game one on doubles by Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) and Tim Carroll (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan), and a second run on a Chris Raniere (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) solo homer in the fourth.

Alvernia (19-9, 10-5 PAC) threatened with two on in the fifth, but stranded a pair at second and third and Wesley starter Ryan Buckland (Middletown, DE/Caravel Academy) retired the last seven batters of the game.  Alvernia junior Zach Lutz (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) went the distance for the Crusaders and struck out four.

Alvernia freshman Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, PA/Williams Valley) cruised through five innings in game two and had two out in the sixth before Wesley scored twice on a single, a triple, and a passed ball.  Alvernia had plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning on a pair of base hits and one Wesley error.

The Crusaders regained the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth.  Raniere doubled to open the first extra inning, took third on a wild pitch and scored when Edwin Tavarez (Reading, PA/Reading) reached on an error.  Wesley pitching walked the next three batters to force in Tavarez and Alvernia briefly enjoyed a two-run lead.

Alvernia closer Andrew Long (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) retired the first two batters in the bottom of the eight, but surrendered a walk and a single before Corey Huemmer (Abingdon, MD/Eastern Tech) delivered a game-winning homer.

Alvernia will return to action next Friday at Marywood University.
