Alvernia Suffers Loss In Fifth Overtime Game

Eby Scores Alvernia's Regulation Goal

BOX SCORE

Huntingdon, Pa. (Oct. 9, 2008) - Freshman Katy Eby (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season late in the first half, but Juniata College (4-10) notched the equalizer early in the second before prevailing in penalty strokes over Alvernia University (6-5) Thursday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Juniata.

It was the fifth time this season Alvernia has gone to overtime to decide a game.  The Crusaders are 2-3 in games that go extra time having won once in a first overtime and once in penalty strokes.

Thursday's game at Juniata was fairly even statistically.  Alvernia scored its long goal in the first half, but then managed just one shot in the second half while the Eagles scored once on six second-half shots.  Alvernia threatened with four shots in the second overtime period, but couldn't net the game-winner forcing the strokes.  Juniata won the shootoff 1-0.

Alvernia goalie Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) made five saves in net for the Crusaders and freshman Tonya Rutt (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) recorded two defensive saves behind Hoffman to help send the game to overtime.

Alvernia will take a short day's rest before heading to Misericordia University for a Freedom Conference game on Saturday.
