Alvernia Splits Season Opening Doubleheader

Grey Earns Win In First Career Start

– Alvernia College split its season-opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon falling 7-3 to Lynchburg College in the opener before rebounding behind freshman Zach Grey (York, Pa./York Catholic) for a 5-0 win in non-conference baseball action at Fox Field.

Alvernia (1-1) opened the scoring in game one in the second inning after threatening in the first. Freshman Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second when Chris Simoncini (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) reached on catcher's interference. Senior Tim Carroll (Bensalem, Pa/Conwell-Egan) doubled home a pair with two outs to break open the scoring.

Lynchburg (4-5) answered with a two-out, two-run double in the home half of the second inning and took a 4-2 lead with two more in the fourth off Alvernia starter Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) who gave up four runs in 3.2 innings.

Alvernia scored a third run in the fifth inning when Carroll singled, stole second, and came home on a James Geosits (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) two-out single. Lynchburg answered that with two runs in the home half of the fifth and closed the scoring with another run in the sixth.

Carroll was the offensive leader for Alvernia in game one going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Grey went five innings for the Crusaders in the nightcap giving up just three hits and striking out four. He walked one and got out of a two-on, no out situation in the fourth inning. Alernia got back-to-back RBI hits in the third inning from Geosits and Dale Curry (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge). Four different players finished had two hits for the Crusaders including Curry who finished with three RBIs.

Alvernia and Lynchburg will face off again on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the three-game series.
