Reading, Pa. (Mar. 13, 2008) – Alvernia College Men's Tennis, the defending champion in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), jumpstarted its title defense Thursday afternoon with a 9-0 sweep of Immaculata University at Angelica Park.
The Crusaders (1-0, 1-0 PAC) won all six singles matches in straight sets and half of them without giving up a game. Sophomore
Zach Lockwood (Reading, Pa./Conrad Weiser), the '07 PAC rookie of the year, won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and teamed with sophomore
Ryan Lineaweaver (Robesonia, Pa./ELCO) for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
The brother tandem of
Phil Snyder and
Eric Snyder (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
Phil Snyder, a senior, also earned a point at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Seniors
Kyle Levengood (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and
David Schaeffer (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) earned three total points without losing a game in singles or doubles action. The two teamed for the win at No. 3 doubles and Schaeffer cruised through his No. 3 singles match and Levengood the same at No. 4 singles.
Lineweaver won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and freshman Aaron Dearstyne (Sinking Spring, Pa./Governor Mifflin) rounded out singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Alvernia will enjoy the thrill of playing at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. this Saturday when it takes on Baruch College in a rematch of last year's first round NCAA Championships.
