Sunday March 30, 2008 (Scranton, PA) – Alvernia settled for a doubleheader split this afternoon at Marywood University after they dropped the first game 5-4 in eight innings before rallying to take the second game 7-2. Senior Beth Jablonowski (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) came up big for Alvernia in the second game with a bases loaded triple to score three runs. With the split Alvernia is now 11-6 (6-2 PAC).
The Crusaders fell behind 1-0 after the first inning of game one, but battled back to tie the score in the top of the third inning when Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) connected for an RBI single up the middle. Alvernia went on to take the 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning when freshman Michele Kassab (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) roped her first homerun of her career over the left field fence to score two.
Marywood quickly regained the 4-3 lead in their half of the inning scoring three runs off of two doubles and two singles. Alvernia battled back once again to tie the score at four in the fifth inning when Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led off the inning with a triple and came around to score on a clutch single from outfielder Crimi.
Neither team could muster a run through the sixth and seventh innings. Marywood finally took the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sac fly to left field. Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity BVM) took the loss in the first game.
The Crusaders put game one behind them and rebounded to score four runs in the top of the first inning highlighted by another lead-off triple from Sorrentino and a three-RBI triple from Jablonowski.
Marywood put up a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning but Alvernia got it right back in the second with a sac fly from Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) to score Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine) who led off the inning with an infield single. The Crusaders added one more run in fourth thanks to an RBI single from Williams and an RBI triple from Kassab.
Marywood added a run in the seventh inning but it was not enough and Alvernia finished up with the 7-2 victory. Freshman Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) earned the win in the second game scattering six hits and only two runs over seven innings of work.
Sorrentino was 5-for-8 with two triples and two runs scored and Crimi was 4-for-8 with two RBIs.
