Alvernia Sweeps Gwynedd Behind Two Walk-Off Home Runs

Emily Williams and Jackie Rhoads Propel Alvernia Over Gwynedd

GAME 2 BOX SCORE

Saturday April 12, 2008 (Reading, PA) - Senior Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) drilled a solo, walk-off home run over the left field fence in the eighth inning to give Alvernia the 3-2 win in the second game, for the sweep of Gwynedd-Mercy this afternoon in a PAC doubleheader.  In game one, Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity) deposited a two-run shot over the left field fence on a 3-0 count to give Alvernia the 8-0, 5-inning win.  Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) earned the complete game victory in game one after surrendering only three hits and no runs over the five inning game.   Williams took the win in the second game scattering ten hits and two runs (one unearned) over eight innings of work.

In game one the Crusaders jumped on the board early scoring four runs in the first inning.  Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led off the inning with a single and was quickly sacrificed to second.  Michele Kassab (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) followed with a double to the fence to plate Alvernia's first run.  Williams then stroked an infield single to score Kassab from third and catcher Samantha Geisenger (Thurmont, MD/Catoctin) connected for her second home run of the season to give Alvernia the early 4-0 lead.

Neither team would score another run until the Crusaders added four more in the bottom of the fifth inning.  With two outs in the fifth inning Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) lined a solo shot over the right field fence for her second home run of the season.  Kassab then walked and came around to score on a double from Rhoads.  Williams followed with her second homerun of the season to end the game due to the eight-run rule.

Game two would be a different affair with the Crusaders not reaching home until an infield single from Kassab in the third inning that scored Sorrentino who had reached with a double.  Kassab would connect again in the fifth inning with two out for a double to score Sorrentino who herself had reached again with a double.

Alvernia would carry their slim 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning and it would not last for long.  An Alvernia error allowed Gwynedd-Mercy's lead-off batter to reach base.  A single and sacrifice bunt later would put runners on second and third with one out.  After a strike out Alvernia seem poised for the 2-0 win.  Gwynedd-Mercy had a different plan as Jenn Smull stroked a single into the right center field gap to tie the game at two, and almost came around to score herself on an errant throw in an attempt to get her out at second base.   Alvernia center fielder Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) would chase down the ball to hold Smull at third, and a fly out to right field would force extra innings.

Williams retired Gwynedd-Mercy in order in their half of the eighth inning.  Lead-off batter Rhoads then crushed the first pitch she saw over the left center field fence to give the Crusaders the 3-2 win.

Alvernia will take on Elizabethtown in a home non-conference double header on Wednesday April 16th beginning at 3:00 pm.
