Thursday April 3, 2008 (Glenside, PA) – Alvernia College earned the sweep over Arcadia University this afternoon with two come from behind victories. In the first game of the day Alvernia fell behind 2-1 after the first inning and rallied back to win 7-3. They followed that up with a 7-6 win in game two after falling behind 3-1 in the fourth inning. Michelle Jensen(Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) improved to 8-2 with the game one victory giving up just seven hits over seven innings. Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity) earned the win for the Crusaders in game two and added a three-run double in the fifth inning to give Alvernia the 5-3 lead.
Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) connected for a homerun in the first inning to give Alvernia the quick 1-0 lead. Arcadia quickly rallied back with two of their own to take the 2-1 lead with a two-run double from Kristen Burns.
The Crusaders stole back the lead in the top of the second inning with a bases loaded triple from Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) to score Shannon Higgins (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickan) who led off the inning with a double, Dina Chiappelli (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) who reached on a single and Janelle Lynch(Macungie, PA/Brandywine) who followed with a walk.
Alvernia added three more in the fourth inning when Lynch and Sorrentino led off the inning with back to back doubles and freshman Michele Kassab (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) followed with her second homerun of the season.
Arcadia got one run back in their half of the fourth inning with a solo homerun from Virginia Buechel. The fifth, sixth and seventh innings were scoreless for both teams to give Alvernia the 7-3 first game victory.
The second game of the day saw Arcadia put up a run in the bottom of the first inning and Alvernia answer with one of their own in the top of the second. Arcadia added two more in the fourth inning with a solo shot from Burns and an RBI double from Kimberly Servello for the 3-1 lead.
The Crusaders rallied back in the fifth inning with four runs of their own to take the 5-3 lead. Lynch led off the inning with her fourth hit of the day and Sorrentino and Kassab quickly followed with two infield singles to load the bases. Pitcher Williams helped her cause with a 3-RBI double for the 5-3 lead.
Alvernia added what would prove to be key runs in the top of the seventh inning when Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) crushed a two-run homerun over the left field fence.
The bottom of the seventh was no easy feat for Alvernia as Arcadia plated three runs thanks to three hits and two Alvernia errors. Williams escaped further damage striking out the tying run.
Alvernia returns to action on Monday April 7, 2008 when they travel to Albright for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
