Tuesday April 8, 2008 (Reading, PA) - Alvernia swept DeSales University this afternoon in non-conference action behind stellar pitching efforts from
Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity) in game one and freshman
Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) in the second game. Williams scattered seven hits and one run for the complete game 2-1 victory. Jensen surrendered only two hits while holding the Bulldogs scoreless through seven to improve to 10-2 on the season.
In game one, DeSales broke the ice in the top of the second inning to go ahead 1-0. Kelly Moran lead off the inning with a line drive single to left-center field and was promptly bunted to second base by Katie Steiner. Bulldog catcher Kristin Schultz connected for a grounder up the middle to plate Moran and give DeSales the 1-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the third inning Alvernia staged a rally of their own.
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, PA./Whitehall) drilled a line drive that tipped off of the left fielder's glove allowing Sorrentino to reach second base.
Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) followed with her third triple of the season with a line drive to right field that was just out of the reach of the fielder. With the game now tied 1-1
Michele Kassab (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) knocked in Crimi with what would prove to be the winning run with a double to right center field. Pitcher Williams shut down DeSales the rest of the way and gave up only three hits through the remaining four innings.
Game two saw Alvernia score the only runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning.
Jackie Rhoads (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) led off the inning with a single, but was quickly erased when she was thrown out at second on a sacrifice bunt attempt from
Shannon Higgins (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickan). Jensen then reached on a walk and catcher
Laura Hetke (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) followed with a single to load the bases with one out. Sorrentino hit the first pitch she saw for a single down the right field line to score two. Starting pitcher Jensen controlled the rest of the game allowing only one runner to reach second base all game.
