Tappan Leads #3 Delaware Valley Into Final

Sophomore Hurls First Complete Game Shutout Of The Season

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (May 17, 2008) – Delaware Valley College sophomore Sean Tappan (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) picked a good time for his first complete game shutout of the season carrying the third-seeded Aggies (25-17) into the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Region Baseball Championship Final with a 5-0 win over #2 Wesley College (27-15) Saturday morning at Alvernia College.

Tappan pitched out of trouble a few times to keep the Wolverines off the board giving up six hits and walking two while striking out five. He allowed base hits in each of the first five innings before settling into a grove setting down nine in a row until Wesley freshman James Overstreet (Dover, Del./Lake Forest) reached on an error.

Tappan walked the leadoff hitter in the ninth, but threw his second double play ball of the day to erase the threat. He picked off a runner in the first and got a double play in the second. Wesley junior Stu Madden (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) singled to open the fourth and made it to third base with two out, but Tappan ended the inning with a fly ball to right to strand Madden.

DVC broke through against Wesley starter Ryan Buckland (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) with two runs in the fifth inning when Buckland's control finally came around to bite him. The senior righty walked five batters and hit a sixth through the first four innings, but kept the Aggies off the board.

In the fifth freshman Zach Chodur (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) led off with a single and Kevin Weingart (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) followed with a walk. The Aggies bunted with their leading hitter Zach Jakubowski (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) and Buckland went 3-0 on sophomore Mike Isgro (Galloway, N.J./Absegami). Isgro got the green light and turned Buckland's 3-0 offering into a two-run triple to open the scoring.

DVC scored on a single, a sac bunt, and two wild pitches in the sixth for a 3-0 lead and went up 5-0 scoring twice in the eight, the first on Brent Terlecky's (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) first home run of the season.

With the win Delaware Valley advanced to the ECAC Championship Final and the 2004 South Region Champions were set to face another champion in host Alvernia College a 7-6 winner over Washington & Jefferson.
