Crusaders Handle PSU-Harrisburg

Alvernia Wins 16-1 In 4 1/2 Innings

Reading, Pa. (March 26, 2009) - The Crusader Softball team defeated visting PSU-Harrisburg (2-15) by a score of 16-1 this afternoon in non-conference action at PSU-Berks.  With the win starter Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) evens her record with four wins and four losses, while Alvernia climbs above .500 to sit at 8-7.

The Crusaders opened their half of the first inning pushing six runs across the plate under gloomy skies.  Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, Pa./Notre Dame) highlighted the inning with a two-RBI double to left center field.  Angela Cook (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton), Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and Amy Mesce (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) all connected for RBI singles in the first inning.  

Alvernia would add five more runs in the second inning, including a sacrifice fly from Diane Lightner (Gaithersburg, Md./Holy Cross) and a two-out, two-RBI double from Mesce.  The third inning saw Lightner drive in another run as the Crusaders tagged on five more runs to push their lead to 16-0.  

PSU-Harrisburg managed to push across one run in the top of the fifth inning after back-to-back singles started the inning and Erika Sorenson drove an RBI-single up the middle.

Mesce was 2-for-3 on the day with a double and three RBIs and Crimi was 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and two walks.

The second game of the double-header was cancelled due to the rain, it will not be rescheduled.

Alvernia will travel to Misericordia on Saturday for a Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
